HIV Topical Microbicide Drug Development To Be Topic Of Cmte. Meeting

HIV topical microbicide drug development will be discussed by FDA’s Antiviral Drugs Advisory Committee at its Aug. 20 meeting.

The committee will consider clinical trial design issues in the development of topical microbicides for the reduction of HIV transmission.

Recently, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced its support of a Phase III trial of The Population Council’s Carraguard (lambda-carrageenan), a non-contraceptive product that adheres to viral cells and may prevent herpes and HIV.

"Hopefully, we’ll be able to support three or four other compounds going into Phase III trial in order to be able to get out and have an effect as soon as possible," Microsoft and foundation head Bill Gates said at the Ninth Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in February.

Biosyn has Savvy (glyminox 1.2% vaginal gel) in Phase I/II studies for contraception and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. Optime Therapeutics has a liposomal microbicide cream in preclinical development for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Also in preclinical development is an HIV microbicide from Idenix Pharmaceutical.

Medarex is conducting research with Epicyte Pharmaceuticals into plant-derived monoclonal antibodies (Plantibodies) microbicides for HIV and other infections.

Microbicide development and women’s groups have recently called for a microbicide branch to be established at the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases.
