But in Iraq there is tremendous oil wealth, and if we spread it widely enough pretty soon the life of the average Iraqi will improve measurably, and perhaps will buy some or even a lot of goodwill. This is the big difference from other conflicts. By the way, from the way we are conducting ourselves there (the latest stupidity being cutting off all the Iraqi military from salaries instead of instituting a reasonable transition period), I am not holding my breath that this will happen. But it's possible. It would have been a lot more possible if we didn't have a right wing ideologue managing the country.
