Not the many State Department Arab specialists I knew over the years. But they were real people who did real work, not cliches and stereotypes invented for the purposes of political rhetoric.

FWIW, Wolfowitz was an East Asia specialist; Eliot Abrams over at NSC was the Latin America Assistant Secretary at State under Reagan; Richard Perle is a Washington ideologue at best....the list goes on and on.

These are the people who want to be the architects of the new Iraq. They will start by having little or no clue about the "old Iraq", which like "old Europe", predates their knowledge and experience by many centuries.

But hey, what failed repeatedly in Vietnam and several Latin American states and Bosnia just might work this time, right?
