You have to wonder about the risks somebody in his position would take in using a corked batting practice bat. Jamie Moyer recounted a time when an opposing batter was caught using a corked bat, and he made a similar claim -- that the bat was to be used by the pitchers during BP.

For what it's worth, I think esp. considering that all of Sosa's bats came up clean, including several previously saved HR bats, he really did have the illegal bat just to juice up batting practice (i.e. his own ego). It's a form of denial to think you won't make a mistake and use it in a game, though. Kind of like the denial that there will always be a greater fool out there.
