Downpayment for a house is at much higher percentage elsewhere, such as in Europe and Asia including Japan. About 10 years ago, a German friend of mine told me that downpayment for house or condo was around 40% in Germany, at that time. One has to work many years and save like the dickens to have enough savings for downpayment. The 10% downpayment in the US is the lowest in the world. Correct me if I am wrong on this.
