Oracle and open source

While it likely isn't a causal connection, I have no doubt Larry & Co. at Oracle grimaced a little at the news this week of MySQL's $19.5-million Series B financing. A commercial license for that fast-growing open-source database software is a flat-fee $440 per server, a tiny fraction of what Oracle charges.

I'm no fan of Clay Christensen, but MySQL has all the hallmarks of a disruptive product. It is low-priced, has traditionally offered a subset of features, and it is dismissed by incumbent vendors as a toy. It is also, however, growing very, very quickly. While MySQL can coexist nicely with ORCL, I am seeing a growing number of database projects that stick with MySQL from development through to commercialization.

The commoditation of the database business has frightening momentum, and Ellison knows it -- or should.

Conway: Tell Larry what you really think

After holing up most of the day, PeopleSoft's Craig Conway came out late today with guns blazing against the Oracle's $5.1-billion takeover offer:

The offer is "atrociously bad behavior from a company with a history of atrociously bad behavior."
"I would have thought in the age of corporate responsibility, and high exposure for CEOs to be honest with integrity, that somebody doing this kind of malicious tactic would think twice, but he obviously didn't."
"It was like Larry was driving by, spotted a really nice wedding in progress and crashed it with a shotgun and said, 'This bride's going to marry me' at the end of a barrel."
"It's a pathetic tactic even by Oracle standards."

Gosh, so many epithets and put-downs to choose from. If I had to summarize, I'd say Craig's not interested in Larry's offer. Call it a hunch.
