Hi Jacob Snyder; Re: "It hasn't destroyed Bush's popularity."

Clinton's felony didn't directly hurt any extensive group of people, though I thought it was sufficient cause for impeachment. Iran-Contra was just another fight between two branches of government over the right to pursue foreign policy. Frankly, I thought what Reagan did was right, and so did a hell of a lot of other people.

But getting us stuck in an Asian land war without an ally to fill the body bags is so stupid that it boggles the mind.

As far as what the American people think, the media is going nuts over this, and the people will get dragged along.

Buchanan agrees with you on the imperialism impulse, but says that we're such ineffective imperialists that we should leave it alone. See, for example:

Where are they, Mr. President?
Pat Buchanan, May 7, 2003

If our occupation of Iraq turns sour and U.S. troops are being shot in the back, a year from now, Americans are going to demand to know. And President Bush could face the charge thrown up in the face of FDR by Clare Boothe Luce, that he "lied us into war."
...
For there is something strange here. If Saddam had these weapons, why did he not surrender them to save himself? If he did not give them up because he intended to use them on us, why did he not use them on us? And if they were destroyed before the war, why did he not simply show us where, and thereby save himself, his family and his regime?
