SQL Server/Sybase has always had page level locking starting a long time ago. Did you mean to say that starting with SQL Server 7.0 row level locking was provided?

page level? They had that early on, do you mean row level locking? Page level locking isn't appropriate for enterprise class software, imo.

SQL 7 was supposed to be the oracle killer and there was a fair amt of anxiety about it from the oracle camp, in fact Oracle hit a low in 97 in the middle of the bull, if I remember correctly.
