I understand about reforming hydrogen: You need steam.

If an acid is added to a reactive metal it will produce hydrogen and a metalic salt. No water is needed, although some of the reactions can get hot and may produce steam if water is used for cooling. Steam can also be produced if the acid is diluted with water.

A common reaction to produce hydrogen is
 aluminium + hydrochloric acid  =>    aluminium chloride  +   hydrogen.
2Al(s) + 6HCl(aq) -> 2AlCl3(aq) + 3H2(g)
