Either they got caught in their own hype, or they're all dumb like Bush, or they thought that there was a good chance that WMD still
existed and took a calculated risk that's now back firing.

All of the above + rummy manipulated all of them. he is the true ideologue in the bunch, with his roots at the PNAC and his association with so many neocon radicals, many of which are on his staff. I think bush was brought along...let's not forget that this man has emphatically said that America should not be in the nation building business. So much for conviction.

its unusual that they are all in on the lie

Not that there is the slightest evidence of anything that could be construed as a "lie"; but you make one of many valid points proving conclusively there was no lie. To believe Bush lied, you have to believe that Bush, Cheney, Powell, Rice, Rumsfeld, and a whole host of other people lied, an absurd proposition.

I think Powell made an adequate defense yesterday: Had the mobile labs not been mobile labs, Saddam undoubtedly would have trotted them out the next day explaining just what they were.

But it is absurd, also, to even SUGGEST that the guy unilaterally destroyed 2,000,000 lbs of chemical agent and 10,000 liters of Anthrax without making a show of it. If he were going to destroy these items (which he was known to have), there is simply no way in hell he would have done so without inviting Peter Arnett and CNN to report it for propaganda purposes -- and probably Hans Blix's crew, too. It is utterly absurd to suggest these items were destroyed.

This man was an absolute expert at hiding his weapons programs and the products of them. This is precisely why weapons inspections could never have worked.
