agreed, but it doesn't drive what is left of the core. in the old daze... never mind. and yes the babble has become the center of the traffic. too bad, but too bad only in comparison to what it used to be in the early days. maybe only 20% noise. amazing how many spend their time on this now working out their half baked politics and their mid life miseries. still enough of the old investor corps have stayed around to keep the point of it going...

meaning SI hasn't changed its name to coffee slop yet.

They probably don't trade any more because the market has been unkind to them over the past couple of years (as it has been to almost everybody). But they continue to come to this site because it is a community that they have become a part of.

When/if they come back to the market, SI will be here for them. (Though I doubt you will see the number of individuals actively involved in the market over any time in the next few years as there was at the top of the bubble.)

You'd rather chase them away?

I don't understand why you have such an objection to "coffee rooms". I do think it would be good to discourage such talk on the stock threads. But why discourage it on seperate threads? It increases membership and page views. It retains members who might otherwise leave.

It should be a net positive for the site.

Instead of trying to discourage off-topic discussion, perhaps it would be more useful to encourage a broadening of investment-related discussion.

For example, I've been trading the Euro FX contracts on the CME almost exclusively lately. I could only find two threads on FX trading here. One is a political discussion in the guise of an FX thread (which really should be moved to the "Coffee" group...) and the other is dead.

I think I'd like to start trading some other commodity contracts as well, but SI is of no help in finding a community that can help me get started. (Especially without search. :) )

Some traders and investors have moved on or broadened into to other asset classes. SI is so focused on stocks that it is likely losing many of those individuals.
