My friend is not the only one who said the actual unemployment rate in NYC, as well as in the US, is much higher than the official figure. Everyone who knows how the US labor dept. collects the data should realize that the gov. figure has grossly underestimated the unemployment rate.

1) Unlike many European countries, the US official figures exclude persons without employment who had stopped looking for a job. They are considered not to be in the labor force. Considering the average time now for getting a job offer is 9 months or longer, more and more people are joining this group.

2)Part-time workers who wanted full-time jobs are nevertheless counted as fully employed. People working even as little as one day a week are categorized as "employed." It is estimated that about two million Americans are in this category. Substitute teachers meet this definition too.

Personally, last time when I looked for a job was when the official unemployment rate was as high as of now, but it was much easier to get an offer than now. go figure!

So believe what you want to believe. None of my business.
