Excuse me, but how do you do something as momentous as transform a major power from a dictatorship to a demo. by accident?

He was trying to make it a bit more open and humane and released forces that he couldn't control and that he was not brutal enough to put down.

Gorbochev knew exactly what he was doing.....the cracks in the communist dictatorship due to financial problems gave him the opportunity to introduce democratic reform. This was not a by chance transformation......it was orchestrated.

We should all be glad that he was not brutal enough to drown the anti-communist movements in a sea of blood, but that hardly qualifies him as such a great leader or peacemaker.

Yes, by your definition, but then again, I have never heard those events interpretated in quite the same way you have.
