I learned a couple of lessons shorting the discount brokers a couple of years ago. (I got blown out of my puts about 2 months before the big drop and never made a dime).

1) Let the mania run on before shorting.
2) Let the mania run a little more.
3) Let it run some more until it is completely ridiculous
4) Let the mania run to insane valuations.
5) Let the mania run some more
6) Buy put LEAPS about 2 years out
