Gorbachev has always said that he wanted to reform the communist party not end its power. He would relinquish some of its power but it was supposed to stay in charge. Yeltsin and others had different ideas once the party had given enough freedom to the people for them to actually push democracy. Unfortunately its still a very flawed democracy (and a very flawed market system as well) but at least the communist party's monopoly on power has ended.

Of course, Gorbachev's public position was that he was reforming communism. What did you want him to say......I am reforming Russia so that it will be just like our enemy, the USA. There is no way he could have done that and been around for more that couple of weeks. The little he did do led to a putsch and his dismissal.

Mr. Gorbachev is guilty of not being able to formulate a transitioning period of reforms that was fully successful. The task was Herculean and nearly impossible. However, he get Russia started in the right direction at a very dangerous time, and for that, he has earned my respect. It certainly was a much harder task than that of R. Reagan who's hardest job was ordering up more WMD to enhance and grow our massive arsenal.
