If Neanderthals were known to have been walking around in large numbers not that many years ago, and someone was making a big effort to thwart attempts to contact Neanderthals, it would hardly be unreasonable to think they still where around, esp. when the number of visible bodies and/or records of deaths where where a lot smaller then the number of known Neanderthals.
