It's not about skirting the law, it's about the US's blatant hypocrisy- not that other countries aren't hypocritical too, but we have this public stance that we're so *humanitarian* when really, we're just self interested, but embarrassed to admit that we are using our superior power to take what we want, and do what we want, no matter what anyone else says, and no matter what the real issues on the planet. We are in other words totally unfit to wield the power that we have, imo. For a country where many of the people claim to be Christians, you'd think the lesson of David and Goliath would have some resonance.

To use the "law" of the UN in a war the UN did not sanction, is, I think, one of the most hypocritical actions I have seen in my lifetime- and I'm terribly embarrassed my country did that. There was no reason the "law" should have been set aside, but there was every reason to let the body that made the law, determine how to enforce it. As you probably know Chapter 7 does not per se require force- the possibility of using force is there, but the UN decides whether to implement it or not- and the US is not the UN. What we have done to international law, and to the UN, is unconscionable. What we have done may be worse than what Saddam has done. Saddam only threatened a small portion of the world, but if we have weakened world order, and the UN, then we have wounded the entire world. I continue to hope that perhaps hatred of the US will actually strengthen the UN- make it more autonomous, and more gutsy. We will see. If the US has ruined the UN, that is, imo a crime against humanity.
