Hell, they were counting on a 'knee-jerk' reaction, and a drift toward a stronger police state, to do more damage to America than the terrorists ever could on their own! Just look at the first, widely publicized, bin Laden videotape after 9-11: He clearly stated: "The American Government, and the West, will lead the American people into an unbearable Hell and a choking life. Freedom and Human Rights are doomed!" Obviously, he was counting on us to shoot ourselves in the foot... by damaging our own freedoms, the heart of our society... and in that regard, he appears to have understood us well.
