great big roaches we call "palmetto bugs" (three inches long and they fly!)

In Austin, the buggers are so big they'll land on your head and chew your scalp off. Or so I've heard. ;P

The first time I visited Houston, I stayed at a friend's house on the north side of town in August. It's a split level house, with a sort of basement at ground level with a wall-length picture window onto the patio on the back of the house. The sound of the cucarachas on the wooden patio kept me awake at night, especially after I discovered what the racket was. It was like a low clicking hiss from the legions of cockroach feet. My friend thought it was funny. Told me to wear sandals if I was going out to the hot tub at night. Ughhh!!!
