And regime change is not for the US to inflict on another country. The UN is, imo, the only body that has that right under international law. We, the US, do not have that right. When we take it, we have done wrong. (Because, of course, every country wants the right to be able to change other regimes that are *bad*- this is not something we want happening, and you cannot give it to one and not others, Either all have it, or none have it.) Now, on to Africa. I do not think huge refugee camps are the answer. I think they need to be of a size that is defensable, and they need to be situated in places that allow easy access to food and water, and there need to be a lot of them. We need to provide medicines, and schooling, and most of all peaceful enclaves. We, the world, need to start saving what we can. We need to put money behind our mission. What we are sending to Africa is pitiful compared to what we've spent in Iraq, and how much suffering are we really going to eliminate? You may think we've changed regimes for the better- but you've got rival religions and ethnicities there, rivals which Saddam's strong arm tactics kept a lid on. Things may actually get worse without him. If they do, and more are killed after this *regime* change, how will you justify our intervention then? Especially when we vitiated international law in order to intervene? It may take years to turn Africa into a good place for Africans. But it is worth the investment. imo I think the same thing about the inner cities in the US. Sometimes you have to write off the current generation (even though there are wonderful people in it) and concentrate on the children- and hope the you get a critical mass. If you want real change, start with children. It takes a while, but it would be worth it. It may not work. Sometimes even the best intentions, fully backed with money, fail. But we haven't even tried yet. There has been almost not money, and no good intentions. Shouldn't we at least try? I happen to think we should.
