I used Turbo Basic for my system scan. Given a home directory, I have a program to build the control file consisting of the system file names using a DIR file. Then I have a program that searches all of those programs for whatever I want displaying or printing the results. Has saved me hours. . . especially when changing for Y2K!

And it's very FAST too!

I was not using Unix. . . Windows / DOS and Foxpro.

(new topic) help Si & help yourself
.
Bob,
.
Everyone on Si looks to you as the Admin and chief code monkey
to make their Si experience better and faster from what Si became
after you left. There are things members can do as users that also
accomplish those goals.
.
For example, over the years i Bookmarked about 25 threads
and eventhought 15 of them went dead, i left them Bookmarked.
.
Everytime i finished reading a thread i clicked back to my Si page
that listed them all, to see which had unread postings.
.
I reviewed those 15, and removed 10 of them as not relevant anymore.
.
This cut in half the time in switching to that Bookmarked page.
.
Member's Peoplemark page can also be reviewed.
.
I'am sure others on this thread can suggest other things to do
that might decrease cycle times between Si pages.
.
The collection of this info could then be transmitted to all members,
as there are some that have been using Si for years and still
have not noticed that a thread's header can be hidden.
.
Incase it applies here like it did on iHub, the number of Ignores
a member has might also be an issue for system wide performance.
.
Eric could clue me in if something called a hashing number
that was used to travel down trees is still used in file-systems
and databases. I think over time it needs to be re-calculated.
