Pre-1917 did the components of iraq have any local autonomy? Were there three components as it seems to be now (shiite south, kurds and central sunni control)or were there more subdivisions. Perhaps the kurds at that point were more aligned with kurds now in other nations but then part of ottoman or syria, or iran?? I am not sure about their national status then either. mike
