At the end of World War II, 80 percent of the daily newspapers in the U.S. were independently owned, but by 1989 the proportion was reversed, with 80 percent owned by corporate chains. In 1981 twenty corporations controlled most of the business of the country's 11,000 magazines, but only seven years later that number had shrunk to three corporations.

It was very sad what happened to Stop the War. It got to the point where I was uncomfortable reading it. I haven't been back. There are people on SI whose only aim is to disrupt. I learned that here on SI, and did it myself for a while. But I needed a change. Some people obviously can be that way forever- imo those people need their own threads, since they are incapable of not being disruptive. They must go after people- there is no way to stop them on an unmoderated thread.

Mephisto learned that a long time ago. I always admired how she could completely ignore people who trolled her thread just to mock her, who took posts away, and were personal and ugly- and she said nothing. Maybe she doesn't pay any attention to the other threads at all. I thought her conduct was exemplary. Whatever you might think of her views, she can keep her head when all about her other folks are losing theirs... :-) I'd say she is the superior human.
