Yes, a lot of pockets were simply bypassed when coalition forces took the country in three weeks. Now they are resisting, having never fought, let alone surrendered. Though I don't know from the reports if the fighters are Ba'athist bitter-enders or imported fedayeen, or both.

But it's not really accurate to say that this guerilla warfare is in "Iraq"; in "the Sunni triangle North and West of Baghdad," would be more accurate. These battles are not happening in Kurdish or Shi'a areas.
