Our problem is that the Arab world, like the Anglo world, tends to stick together as a whole. Not that well. They are as likely to fight each other as they are to fight Israel or the US. Some radical "volunteers" have joined up and some more will. Possibly even enough to create some serious problems, but I didn't say it would be a cake walk, I just said it wouldn't be another Vietnam. Also as much as I don't want these people causing problems for us in Iraq I'd rather have them charging an M1 then blowing up a US embassy. Even the stupidest anthropologist on the planet, when faced with the question of whether or not the Iraqis would submit to foreign rule (giggle) would not fail to look at the Palestinian case before he made a recommendation to the President. It should be looked out but it would be more relevant if we were trying to fold Iraq in to an American Empire and rule it rather then restoring order before transitioning to a new Iraqi government. We haven't been building settlements, grabbing all the water rights and bull dozing homes. Almost every single Palestinian views the Israelis as a hostile imperial power. This isn't the case with Iraq and the US. I'm not saying it is impossible that we could have a big problem on our hands I just think what you predict as near certainty is really more of the worst case scenario. Go look at Lebanon. They didn't have an "active large regular army opposing" Israel. There was no "large scale coordination of forces". There was no "superpower support". The "logistical problems" were no worse than Iraq possesses. The "terrain" wasn't much different. But the result was that the Israelis were shot out of the country. I think a larger percentage of the Lebanese people viewed the invasion as a takeover attempt. Israel did have the advantage of the Christian militias but they where a disadvantage as well because the atrocities they committed turned Lebanon even more against Israel. Also Syria and Iran felt more free to assist any opposition to Israel then they did to the US. While a US invasion of either Syria or Iran to remove their government is unlikely (and in my opinion would be a very bad idea) it is enough of a possibility that they have to consider it and be a bit more wary. Israel was never that kind of threat to Iran and even in the case of Syria the invasion threat was less severe. Maybe you should rent "Lawrence of Arabia" instead. But when you watch it, remind yourself that this is an "Anglo" version of Arab history, and as such is quite defective. Interesting coincidence. I just bought the DVD recently. From what I do know of the movie I agree that it won't be completely accurate history, but then it might be close then many other Hollywood versions of history. Hey, if the Arabs were throwing flowers at us I wouldn't be complaining. But the fact is that on May 1st the President announced that major fighting in Iraq was over. Less than 60 days later, we've got major fighting again. I'm not complaining that there is nothing to worry about or even complain about, I just think your idea about what is going to happen there is far from a lock. As for major fighting, for the people who the bullets are flying at every combat is major but I don't think I would call this recent fighting major. You look at this and say that since we don't have a Tet offensive, this is not like Vietnam. But your wisdom is like that of the man who jumped off of a tall building and was satisfied with his situation at the 99th floor. I think your reasoning is like the person looking over the edge of the tall building from the observation deck and thinking that he is falling. You're saying that since there is no superpower support against us we'll win What I was saying was because of that fact (and other things some of which were more important then that) we are not doomed to lose. We could still bungle things. We could slip and fall off the building, its windy and the safety fence is too low but we aren't falling yet. Tim
