Bush had to know that pushing a peace process now would make a war with Hamas much more likely, not less.

I don't know if he "knew" it would be more likely but they certainly declared and acted on their opposition to Bush's effort.

They've been outed. They are against an Iraeli-Palestinian peace agreement and say they will go to any lengths to destroy one.

The factors dangerous to Hamas are Sharon - his statements got serious comments in Palestinian and other Arab press - he can deliver if conditions are right and he clearly won't go for an Oslo type arrangement, and Iraq - the mass graves there have electrified folk and the US is looking a lot better than before, and Iran and Saudi - how long are the regimes there going to continue in power and support terrorism?

Hamas has painted a bulls eye on itself, front and back. I don't know if anyone but Israel will shoot at it but it won't surprise me if over the next few months we see other players distancing themselves from Hamas.
