Les, I believe that the taxes should be progressive with no cutoff points and a starting point above poverty levels.

Les, that's what happens anyway. The people at the low end do not even come close to financing their SS/Medicaid payout.

The motivation for income and payroll taxes is not the collection of revenue, but a misguided attempt to level differences between people. The current method of taxation is pisspoor if the goal is to actually maximize tax revenue. Income, investment gain, and saving should be rewarded, not punished.
