That is an interesting essay. It reminds me of something I read recently - despite the common conception that Jews were forced Israel after the destruction of the Second Temple, in fact the migration of Jews to the urban centers of Greek and Roman civilization had been going on for centuries, and Jews would remain in Israel for centuries more.

Apparently the Diaspora was in part, at least, due to a desire for bright lights and big cities.
