We perceive a direction in human history because we are creating it. Such an observation is independent of belief in God, but ironically it is those who do believe in God who most often have difficulty with this. As long as one expects purpose to originate elsewhere, to be something handed down from above, very little makes sense. A command-and-control God for whom "freedom" means simply the choice to obey or be damned may well engender fear and deference, but never genuine love or worship.
