Lower taxes mean that the average person is more control of their own economic life because they get to decide how to spend the money rather then the government.

It is easy to see that this notion is wrong. If taxes were reduced to zero your theory would predict that people would have total control of their economic life, but the truth is that corporations influence your personal economy much more than does the government.
