Was that McNealy valuation quote supposedly said onstage at JavaOne, or was it said privately to the writer?

BTW at least in the version I saw (who knows, maybe there were several) he said multiply float by $5 and you get "$15-20B, then add a premium on top of that." I don't recall him mentioning $28B or any specific sum. He said "I don't know of any non-convicted-monopolist who can afford that." Then immediately after that the writer adds something like: "People interpreted this as a dig at Microsoft, which has $48B in cash on its balance sheet."
