Brokerages targeted in police raid

Police swooped in on 13 Bay Street brokerage firms and one business Wednesday afternoon as part of an investigation into alleged stock market manipulation.

Thirty officers in a task force -- made up of RCMP, the Ontario Securities Commission, the Ontario Provincial Police Anti-Rackets Section, and local enforcement authorities -- were looking for documents or other evidence but did not provide details on what or who they were investigating.

The search began after 3 p.m. EDT.

"Our investigation focuses on a small part of the stock market involving high-risk, highly-speculative stocks on the fringe of the stock market," said Inspector Bob Davis, the officer in charge of the RCMP Greater Toronto Area Commercial Crime Section.

"Despite its limited impact on the average investor, we are concerned about any illegal activity that takes place in Ontario's capital markets and we will aggressively investigate any allegations of wrong-doing."

The firms where warrants were executed were not named, but the searches "do not indicate complicity in the matter under investigation."

The press release also said that "since this is an active investigation, no further details can be provided."
