FPGAs are a subset of PLDs. ALTR and XLNX currently have about 80% of the PLD market and their combined annual sales are about $2B. The $9B figure is wildly inaccurate.

This article loses credibility because it chose not to quote ALTR and XLNX executives about adaptive computing. It also doesn't talk about patents. I expect that FPGA value will continue to be enhanced by in system programmability. I can't tell from the article if adaptive computing will be additional IP for FPGAs.
