Racehorse, re >information about SBC-Yahoo DSL< A relative got it a month ago and is delighted. I helped her upgrade a few programs via download and it seems as fast as my own Comcast cable connection. An actual test of download speed using pcpitstop was well withing the advertised limits. If I didn't already have cable, I'd get SBC-Yahoo DSL in a heartbeat.

DSL performance is sensitive to how far away you are from the CO (Central Office) to which you will be connected. Ask SBC to run a test on your line and verify how far you are away. If they won't tell you the distance, ask them the maximum speed you could subscribe to. DSL can be as fast as 5 MBPS if you are willing to pay around $400/mo, but they will not sell you this unless you are relatively close to the CO. If you are closer than 5000 ft to the CO you can expect good performance assuming the company is on the ball about their equipment and software. Over 10,000 ft is getting dicey. Over 15,000 ft, not worth it IMO.

FWIW, Verizon DSL has just lowered rates to $35/mo so the SBC deal isn't so much a market beater. DSL providers are sweating about the expansion of cables companies into broadband and they are being forced to compete.
