I'm wondering why Sun is so late into the Linux support game.

Guess: because some decision making at Sun is still done by those technically literate.

Linux may be popular. Popular does NOT make it good. The Linux kernel is reputed to be controlled and maintained by those who are technically literate, but a complete system is much more than the kernel. Much of the code that makes up a Linux distribution is, IMHO, as bloated as anything coming out of Redmond.

Alas, Linux has become popular enough that people know it's name, if not its function, and believe it to be the next big thing. This forces companies like Sun (and IBM, and probably others) to have a Linux story.

But that's all just a guess.
