Those were the days when the Israeli Air Force flew Mirages, remember? I do remember. Then France decided her bread was buttered on the other side and dropped Israel like a hot potato - refusing to sell any spare parts right in May 1967, if I remember correctly. Did you know, among Charles de Gaulle's papers they found a speech eulogizing the late state of Israel, prepared for appropriate use after the 1967 war? Yes, Israel had a period of being 'plucky little kibbutzniks', David against Goliath, after WWII. But then they won big in 1967. They weren't so cute after that. The hubris of victory may have contributed to that, of course. But also, the socialistic ethos of Europe wanted underdogs to cheer, and they didn't fit the bill anymore. Adding insult to injury, they moved away from socialism during this period. Also, there is a major factor that you have not considered - the Holocaust. For fifty years, the memory and shame of the Holocaust set anti-Semitism in a very bad odor in Europe. It's worn off now. Anti-Semitism still generally adopts the cover of the much more respectable anti-Zionism, but it's there. If you doubt this, let me ask a simple question. There are hundreds of peoples on this earth who have suffered much worse than the Palestinians, and behaved collectively much better and much less self-destructively, polictically speaking. Like the Kurds, to take just one example. Do the Europeans care two cents for them? No. They are only passionate about one people's liberation struggle, to the point of overlooking little details like terrorism and dictatorship. Likewise if you are looking for oppressors and abusers of human rights, you can find many worse examples than the Israelis - Syria, or Iraq (until April), or Egypt - just look at the treatment of the Shia, the Kurds or the Copts. But the Europeans don't seem to care much about that either. Now, why is it that the Europeans are only passionate about the Palestinians? But of course, anybody who questions the approved dogma is pro-Palestinian and a raving anti-Semite to boot. So it has been decreed. I take enough of that garbage from Win. I expect better from you, Steven. I have never said that those who are anti-Likud or who criticize Sharon are anti-Semites. You show me one post where I have classed criticism of the Israeli government as anti-Semitic.
