"Investors are like fishermen...."
That is so true.
As for how much is enough, I see almost on a daily basis one Hollywood type or another going broke or squandering millions. Jane Seymour and Michael Jackson, to name two, have seen fortunes vanish. Jack Clark, former St. Louis Cardinals slugger, is bankrupt, according to a host of one of the radio talk shows.
How to measure success? That means different things to different people, of course. I think success means being able to do what you enjoy doing for a long period of time.
For example, the K.C. Star last Sunday had a piece on a 76-year-old man who has worked at a renowned Kansas City barbeque restaurant since 1958. He is the "pitmaster," meaning his job is to keep the barbeque pit churning out those wonderful smoked ribs and other meats.
He's a success because, growing up in Mississippi, he was a sharecropper. The grandson of a slave.
So, yes, from his eyes, he has lived a good life, and has been recognized for his accomplishments.
For most of us, though, I think success means giving our children the knowledge and encouragement they will need to carry on long after we are gone.
I know of no greater thrill than when my 6-year-old daughter, after a bout with a respiratory infection, is back to her old self and slaps a bear hug around my thighs.
