The Globe and Mail reports on Page 1 Thursday that police swooped on 13 brokerages Wednesday afternoon as part of a stock manipulation probe involving shares of a tiny company in hunting for sunken treasure off the coast of Cuba. The Globe's Karen Howlett, Sinclair Stewart and Paul Waldie write that at 3 p.m., about 30 police officers from five different agencies fanned out in Toronto, enforcing search warrants at big and small brokerages alike, including National Bank Financial, Dundee Securities, RBC Dominion Securities and Canaccord Capital. The investigation revolves around Visa Gold Explorations, an obscure company based in Woodbridge, Ont., and once headed by former solicitor-general Doug Lewis. Paul Frustaglio, president of the company, is among 13 individuals named in a search warrant. A company's stock can be manipulated by outsiders without its involvement or knowledge. The lion's share of the questionable trading in Visa Gold was done through Brant Securities and defunct Taurus Capital Markets Ltd., according to the warrant. National Bank and Dundee also actively traded the shares, as did Brawley Cathers, Yorkton Securities, Buckingham Securities and Rampart Securities.
