Were you suffering from negative news overload?

Nice get. It's not so much negative news that's getting to me, it's witnessing the positive reinforcement given to jerks. I can be fascinated with "bad boys" the same as everyone. I was fascinated with Dennis Rodman, in his day. But, in the process, I never confused his worth as a human being with that of his teammate, Steve Kerr. Fascination is not the same thing as admiration. I think that distinction has gotten lost in our culture.

My reaction to watching the news on TV has been this overwhelming need to change channels or hit the mute button whenever most anyone from the NBA opens his mouth. Or Hollywood. Or the Bush Administration. I turned off TV news a while back and I've gotten to the point where I can't even read this stuff in the papers. I'm following the news now by just searching for the couple of topics that interest me and avoiding the front pages. Thank heavens for Google news. It's been a while, too, since I quit reading SI except for this sparse thread. I just don't want to hear anything from jerks anymore. There are way too many of them and seemingly not enough people are recognizing them for what they are.

I imagine this mood will pass... <g>
