I didn't think that you can get pure powdered nitrogen. Nitrogen doesn't even turn to liquid until very low temperatures. Perhaps it was a compound with lots of nitrogen in it?

That would be nitrate, which is a different animal. Nitrogen only exists as a gas above -185 C. at normal pressures.
