I'm not sure there is hope, because hope means you expect change- and I do not expect change. My students have taught me to love them without expecting change- and oddly enough they seem to change more, in response to my affection, and my lack of judgment, than they do for other teachers who are more...authoritarian. People will change out of fear, or anger- but they won't go the way you want them to. The only way to have people change for the better (for the better that I want) is for them to change for themselves, into more educated, tolerant people, and not have them change because you expect them to. Obviously as a human I want and desire certain things to happen in my students, and in the people of the world in general, but I try not to expect those things to happen. That makes it like a gift, when things do happen- like a gift I was not expecting. ugh- I'm not sure I put this very well. You're going to think I'm stuffing daisies up my own nose. But what I have written is quite true for me. I'm just not sure I can communicate it adequately. Happiness is a hard thing to articulate, without sounding a little inane, or a little insane.
