Raymond, as far as I can tell, the problem is fairly systemic - a lack of interest in history by the public, and the takeover of news delivery via corporate run TV and soundbyte spin hypnosis are very difficult problems to overcome - rather than just expecting that one day the masses will wake up and realize the truth, other strategies may be needed. Therefore, my hypothesis is now that the only way to get out of this vortex is for things to get much worse before they get better - people seem to focus only on their own situation rather than the big picture. Only when the crap hits the fan will they wake up, and then naturally blame it on someone else like the nearest politician. Greed and selfishness are rampant, and unlike Mr. Gekko, I do not think it is good. Unfortunately, this is the Ken Lay scenario -- the crims get away with lying and stealing, then slink off and enjoy their riches while we struggle to pick up the pieces.

California's government is out of control. I don't like Davis because he's bought and paid for (ironically, his standing up for the consumer in the energy crisis was one of the better things he's done), but the right wing alternatives are far worse. Then you have the initiative process to make bizarre laws, Prop. 13 to give huge tax inequities to long time property holders and corporations who never sell their property while new residents struggle with huge mortgages and huge property tax bills, a requirement that 2/3 of the legislature approve the budget, which allows a small minority of repubs to say they won't approve any new taxes, so we can't pass a budget under crisis, and a recall effort which could let a candidate with 5% of the vote become governor (too bad Pat Paulsen's not around any more !). A recall won't solve anything.

I think Arnold will save it for the next real election though. He'd be a fool to step into this mess.

Other than that sideshow circus, things are great - it's summer in the Bay Area, and it's still the best place to live in this crazy country, heh heh.
