Containment. I haven't got the news story on this handy, but the problem in a nutshell was that they were trying to replace existing aluminum or copper conductors in an underground conduit and pull new superconducting wires within the existing conduit. Someone assumed this would be air tight. They were wrong. The liquid nitrogen was impossible to contain and the cost of constant replenishment became a huge headache.
