The tabloidization and infantilization of mass media is something to behold. On the other hand, at least in certain quarters, elegance and class are making a comeback. Look at the skyrocket career of Diana Krall. She started out not too long ago as a piano player/vocalist playing nightclubs. Now she packs them in at Carnegie Hall. She's added strings and high production values to her CDs, so lamentably to some, she has departed somewhat from her jazz roots. But her success and the success of her many copycats indicates there is a cadre of people out there who want a little class in their lives.

edit: Another positive trend is the revival of the martini. Even old school drinks like the Sidecar are back in vogue. Is there anything more elegant in form than the cocktail glass?
