You know other countries criticize themselves too. There are German writers and film makers who are obsessed with the guilt of Germany. I'm sure some Germans see them as "anti-German"- but they are really just working out their feelings. Nothing "anti" about that. We see the same sort of expurgation of feelings of national guilt in some of the writings about British colonization, or Dutch rapacity in Africa. Perhaps people who do not think other countries criticize their own past, simply haven't read enough world lit.

That would be okay if "we" also celebrated "our" successes equally passionately.

Otherwise, "we" merely become nattering nabobs of negativism.

And I know you're old enough, as many here aren't, to recognize that phrase!
