Reasonable observations. Although I read a great deal about how the mess occurred, I got so fatigued that I am not as clear on the bailout.

Deposit insurance was an intelligent response to the experience of bank runs during the Depression. By adding confidence to the system, it made it less likely that there would be ruinous deflation. Whether it continues to be a good policy, or whether those who were indemnified beyond the standard were prudent, I cannot say with confidence. I think that sticking to the limit would have been best, though.
