SCOOP.... I think that the revamping of EU institutions provides for merging the two posts that deal with foreign affairs into one, namely, EU High Representative for Common and Foreign Policy --held by Javier Solana-- and EU Commissioner for External Relations --held by Chris Patten. (*)

Guess who'll fill the new post? My bet is that Belgium's current foreign minister, Louis Michel --the bête noire of the US-- will be strongly supported by both France and Germany to become Europe's first Commissioner for foreign affairs.... either that or former PM Dehaene replaces Prodi at the helm.

Gus

(*) The new foreign minister, also to be elected by member states, would combine the existing roles of external relations commissioner, held by Chris Patten, and its foreign policy commissioner, held by Javier Solana.
