The introduction of competition into the education establishment has produced some desired results where I live. About 5 years ago, a charter school was started because of 30 years of frustration with poor results, lack of discipline and structure, and basically poor administration, particularly in the middle school. Of course the Board of Ed screamed and sued (still ongoing, in fact) but the charter school started up and guess what? The established school administrations started introducing new programs, enforcing rules, tightening standards...WHAT a coincidence, huh? And a lot of people who would have either moved out of town or sent their kids to private school are sending their kids to the charter school - or try to, your name must be picked from a lottery since there's only 18 kids max per class. Particularly at the elementary school level, people want to educate their kids locally, with the town or neighborhood.
