So, were they really deployed to pressure Saddam into UN compliance, or was it just a convenient excuse to get them all staged?

And if we hadn't staged them there, both to pressure Saddam AND THE UNSC, that Bush was serious about forcing Saddam into compliance??

Even less would have happened on the inspection front...

I mean, come on Shiloh... Anyone with children knows that if you don't show them the belt you've been threatening them with, they'll lose their respect for you and disobey...

And just imagine a cop trying to force a suspect into surrendering his hostages... Do you think any hostage taker would seriously respond to demands by the authorities that he knows they have no intention of carrying out??

There have to credible consequences for disobeying the law (in this case, binding UNSC resolutions). Lose all respect for your willingness to carry out your threats and the inmates will will eventually run the asylum...

But on the other hand, it would seem that there are many folks who would desire us to surrender the concept of civilization to the despots of the world.

All matters of fighting readiness aside, the issue of our troops sitting on the sidelines presupposes the argument of invasion.

Once positioned, they can't sit for reasons you and Nadine have stated and they can't retreat because we would lose face.
?

They could have withdrawn if they could have credibly claimed that they had achieved their object - if Saddam had fully cooperated with 1441, or been overthrown in a palace coup by a new government whose stated intent was cooperation.
