To you, they may be ignorant or stupid. To them, it is you who are ignorant or stupid.

And neither of you can prove that the other is wrong or that you are right.

That's what makes the problem of religion so intractable.

They are just as satisfied with their system of knowing and certainty as you are with yours.

By your assumptions, they are ignorant and stupid. By their assumptions, though, you are the ignorant and stupid one.

The only real difference is that you may be content to let them remain in what you consider to be their ignorance and stupidity, whereas they want to rescue you from your ignorance and stupidity and help you recognize the real truth.

Other than that, you and they are alike in your certainty of rightness.

Actually, there is one more difference.

They are probably more willing to die for their beliefs than you are for yours.
